About the Funder
The Alaska Airlines | Hawaiian Airlines Foundation was created to continue the community giving legacy of both Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines. As airlines with deep histories of service in Alaska and Hawai‘i, the Foundation focuses its giving on programs that strengthen communities, honor cultural identity, and preserve the way of life of the people and places where the airlines were founded.
The Foundation works in close partnership with local nonprofits and prioritizes organizations that demonstrate meaningful community partnerships, strong local relevance, and long-term program sustainability.
What This Program Supports
The Foundation supports nonprofit programs serving communities in Alaska and Hawai‘i that align with one or more of the following focus areas:
Cultural Programs That Strengthen Community Identity
Programs that celebrate, preserve, and strengthen the cultural identities of Alaska and Hawai‘i communities. This may include community-based cultural education, intergenerational learning, cultural preservation, and programs rooted in local traditions.
Preservation of Natural Environments
Initiatives that protect, preserve, and steward the natural environments of Alaska and Hawai‘i. This may include conservation, environmental education, land and water stewardship, habitat protection, and community-based environmental programs.
Preservation of Art and Language
Programs that preserve, promote, or revitalize art, language, and cultural expression. The Foundation notes a preference for Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian organizations, though other eligible nonprofits may also apply.
Eligible Support Types
The Foundation provides charitable grants for programs that align with its giving priorities in Alaska and Hawai‘i.
Eligible funding may support:
Community-based programs
Cultural preservation initiatives
Environmental preservation and stewardship programs
Art and language preservation efforts
Programs with demonstrated impact and long-term sustainability
Grant funds must be spent within one year of award.
Eligibility & Preferences
Eligible applicants must be U.S.-based tax-exempt nonprofit organizations under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.
The Foundation prioritizes organizations and programs that demonstrate:

Clear alignment with Alaska and Hawai‘i communities
Demonstrated community impact
Appropriate organizational capacity
Strong program budgets
Meaningful geographic reach
A clear number of people served
Funding decisions are based on factors including the number of people served, geographic reach, organizational capacity, operating budget size, demonstrated impact, and program budget.
Applicants should also note that the amount requested should not represent more than 10% of the organization’s overall operating budget or more than 50% of the program budget.
Ineligible Requests
The Foundation does not fund:
Nonprofit organizations without current 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status
Political, labor, and fraternal organizations
Religious organizations without a secular community designation
Hospitals and medical research institutions
Individuals
Conferences or symposia
Individual preschools, primary schools, secondary schools, school districts, or Parent Teacher Associations
Exhibitions
Individual sports teams and sports tournaments
One-time volunteer events not connected to a program curriculum
Trips and travel
Contests
Parades
Sponsorship of fundraising or other events, including tables
Advertising
Tickets to events
Supply drives
Religious organizations may only be eligible if the request is through a separate secular community designation that provides services to people regardless of religious belief and does not promote a specific faith.
Funding Amounts
Grants begin at $5,000.
The Foundation does not list a maximum grant amount. Grant size is based on program alignment, community reach, organizational capacity, demonstrated impact, and budget considerations.
