About the Funder

The Alaska Airlines | Hawaiian Airlines Foundation builds on the longstanding community involvement of Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines. Programs that strengthen community identity and celebrate or preserve local culture.

Environmental Preservation

Initiatives that protect and preserve natural environments.

Art & Language Preservation

Programs focused on preserving art, language, and cultural traditions.

The Foundation gives preference within this area to Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian organizations, although other eligible organizations may also apply.

Organizations demonstrating strong community partnerships and long-term program sustainability are prioritized.

Eligible Organizations

Applicants must be U.S.-based, tax-exempt nonprofit organizations recognized under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.

Programs should serve communities in:

• Alaska
• Hawai‘i

The Foundation considers factors including the number of people served, geographic reach, organizational capacity, operating budget, demonstrated impact, and program budget when determining grant awards.

Funding Amounts

Grants begin at $5,000.

Funding requests should not represent:

• More than 10% of the applicant organization’s overall operating budget
• More than 50% of the program budget

Grant funds must be spent within one year of the award.

Ineligible Requests

The Foundation does not fund:

• Organizations without current 501(c)(3) status
• Political, labor, or fraternal organizations
• Religious organizations unless they have a separate secular community designation
• Hospitals or medical research institutions
• Individuals
• Conferences or symposia
• Individual preschools, primary schools, or secondary schools
• School districts or Parent Teacher Associations
• Exhibitions
• Individual sports teams or sports tournaments
• One-time volunteer events not connected to a broader program curriculum
• Trips or travel
• Contests
• Parades
• Fundraising event sponsorships or tables
• Advertising
• Event tickets
• Supply drives

Application Timeline

The Foundation offers three annual application rounds:

• March 31
• June 30
• September 30

Organizations receiving funding may be asked to provide periodic progress updates, metrics, or other information demonstrating program impact.

Applicants should be prepared to explain the proposed program, the communities it will serve, its anticipated impact, organizational capacity, program budget, and plans for long-term sustainability.

Programs should clearly demonstrate their connection to communities in Alaska or Hawai‘i and alignment with at least one of the Foundation’s funding priorities.
