About the Funder
Banfield Foundation was established in 2015 to help make preventive veterinary care possible for pets that need it most.
Through grants, partnerships, medical supplies, disaster assistance, and the expertise of veterinary professionals, the Foundation works to remove barriers that prevent pets from receiving necessary veterinary care.
Banfield Foundation is closely connected to Banfield Pet Hospital, part of Mars Veterinary Health, and focuses much of its charitable work on expanding access to veterinary services for pets and families experiencing financial or geographic barriers to care.
What This Program Supports
The Community Care Grant is specifically designed to help organizations provide affordable veterinary care to owned pets.
Eligible programs may deliver care through:
- On-site veterinary clinics
- Mobile veterinary clinics
- Pop-up veterinary clinics
- Community veterinary care events
- Other nonprofit or government-operated veterinary programs serving owned pets
The intent of the program should be to help vulnerable or low-income pet owners who might otherwise be unable to access or afford veterinary care.
Applicants are not necessarily required to conduct formal income screening, but programs should clearly demonstrate that they are reaching pet owners facing barriers to veterinary care.
Priority Veterinary Services
Banfield Foundation prioritizes programs that can help a significant number of pets while keeping costs to owners as low as possible.
Particular priority is given to free or nearly free preventive and wellness care, as well as basic veterinary services addressing minor illnesses and injuries.
Examples may include:
- Preventive veterinary care
- Wellness examinations
- Vaccinations
- Medications
- Treatment for minor illnesses
- Treatment for minor injuries
- Care for common conditions such as ear or eye infections
- Other basic veterinary services that help keep pets healthy and with their families
The Foundation may also consider providing an in-kind donation of medications or vaccines in conjunction with a grant award when appropriate and cost-effective.
Eligible Expenses
Grant funds may be used for the direct medical costs associated with providing eligible veterinary services, including:
- Medications
- Drugs
- Vaccines
- Veterinary medical supplies
- Other direct costs of eligible veterinary care
Applicants should clearly explain how Banfield Foundation funding will translate into veterinary care for pets in need.
Eligibility & Preferences
Eligible applicants include:
- 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations
- Local government agencies
- State government agencies
- Municipal animal service organizations that meet program requirements
Organizations must have access to veterinary professionals to deliver the proposed services.
Veterinarians and other veterinary professionals may be:
- Employed directly by the applicant
- Working under contract
- Serving as volunteers
The funded program must primarily provide veterinary care to owned pets, rather than animals awaiting adoption or unowned animal populations.
Ineligible Requests
The Community Care Grant does not support:
- Veterinary care for adoptable shelter pets
- Feral animals
- Livestock
- Wildlife
- Voucher programs
- Veterinary care delivered through for-profit veterinary practices
- Programs that simply subsidize care at a set amount per pet
- Wages or staff time
- General overhead
- Equipment
- Marketing expenses
- Pet food
- Routine spay/neuter services
Because the Foundation wants its resources to benefit as many pets as possible, funding is also generally not prioritized for:
- Expensive orthopedic procedures
- Specialty veterinary care
- Emergency veterinary procedures
- Microchips
Programs supported through this grant should not be designed to generate revenue for the applicant organization.
Funding Amounts
💰 Grants of up to $10,000
Funding is intended primarily for the direct costs of veterinary medications, vaccines, drugs, and medical supplies.
The Foundation may also supplement grant funding with donated veterinary medications or vaccines when appropriate.
Applicants should develop budgets that demonstrate how funding will help reach as many pets as possible while keeping veterinary services free or very low-cost for participating pet owners.
Previous Funding Restrictions
Organizations may generally receive Community Care Grant funding only once within a 12-month grant cycle.
Organizations may receive funding for up to two consecutive years.
After receiving funding for two consecutive years, an organization must take a gap year before it can be considered for another Community Care Grant.
Funding received through the Foundation’s Disaster Relief Grant program does not count toward this gap-year requirement.

Why This Opportunity Is a Good Fit
This opportunity is particularly well suited for organizations that:
- Provide veterinary services directly to owned pets
- Serve low-income or otherwise vulnerable pet owners
- Operate a nonprofit, mobile, or pop-up veterinary clinic
- Have veterinarians or veterinary professionals available to provide care
- Need support for vaccines, medications, and veterinary medical supplies
- Can provide preventive and basic veterinary care at little or no cost to pet owners
- Want to expand the number of pets their veterinary program can serve
The Community Care Grant is especially attractive for animal welfare organizations that are working beyond traditional sheltering and adoption programs to address one of the biggest reasons pets are surrendered or go without treatment: the cost of veterinary care.
