About the Funder

BankNewport Charitable Foundation was established in 2023 as an extension of BankNewport’s long-standing commitment to Rhode Island communities. Since 1819, BankNewport has invested in strengthening the economic vitality and well-being of the state.

In 2025 alone, BankNewport awarded $1.75 million in charitable grants, sponsorships, contributions, and branch donations to more than 500 organizations across Rhode Island.

The Foundation focuses its grantmaking on initiatives that advance:

  • Arts & Culture
  • Healthy Lives & Thriving Communities

Special consideration is given to programs that serve low- to moderate-income individuals and communities, particularly in the areas of human services and community development.

The BankNewport Charitable Foundation provides grants of $5,000 and over for:

The Foundation does not make multi-year commitments, and prior funding does not guarantee continued support.

Funding Restrictions

The Foundation does not fund:

  • General operating support (including salaries and stipends)
  • Grants to individuals
  • Multi-year commitments
  • Organizations recently awarded significant Foundation support (may be asked to wait before reapplying)

Submission of an application does not guarantee funding.


Timeline & Review

The Foundation reviews grant proposals twice per year.

Current Grant Cycle

📅 Application Window: June 15 – August 1
📅 Application Deadline: August 1
📅 Review: September Foundation Board Meeting
📅 Decision Notification: October

Additional annual deadline: February 1 (reviewed in March; decisions in April)


Eligibility

  • 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations serving Rhode Island
  • Programs aligned with Foundation focus areas
  • Organizations in good standing

Application Process

Applications must be submitted during an open grant window and completed in full. Applicants should ensure:

  • Clear alignment with one or more Foundation priority areas
  • Demonstrated impact on Rhode Island communities
  • Strong program design and community need
