About the Funder
The Potomac Region Employee Community Fund (ECF) is a charitable fund supported by Boeing employees across the Washington, DC metropolitan area. Established in 2000, the chapter pools voluntary payroll contributions from employees to support nonprofit organizations that serve communities throughout the region.
More than 130 Boeing employees across locations in Washington, DC, Virginia, and Maryland contribute to the fund. The Potomac Region Chapter Grantmaking Committee—made up of employee volunteers—reviews grant applications and directs funding to nonprofits delivering direct services to individuals and families in the communities where employees live and work.

Our Heroes – Veterans & Military Families
Programs that support veterans and their families through services such as housing assistance, employment support, healthcare access, and community reintegration.
Our Homes – Low-Income Communities
Programs that strengthen communities and support individuals and families experiencing economic hardship.
Examples may include:
- Food banks and hunger relief programs
- Homeless shelters and transitional housing
- Mental health and social services
- Low-income medical clinics
- Youth and family support programs
The chapter also supports equipment purchases, renovations, and capital improvements that directly benefit nonprofit clients and service recipients.
Eligible Support Types
Funding may support:
- Health and human service programs
- Community-based education initiatives
- Veteran support services
- Housing and homelessness programs
- Equipment, facility upgrades, and capital assets that support service delivery
Eligibility Requirements
Organizations applying must:
- Be a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in good standing
- Have held nonprofit status for at least two years
- Provide services within the Potomac Region (Washington DC, Virginia, and Maryland)
- Demonstrate direct benefit to individuals and families served by the organization
Organizations must ensure services are accessible regardless of age, gender, race, religion, sexual orientation, national origin, disability, or ability to pay.
Ineligible Requests
The Potomac Region ECF does not fund:
- Political organizations or programs
- Religious or sectarian organizations
- Private foundations
- Travel, trips, or tours
- Conferences, seminars, auctions, and fundraising events
- Athletic teams or sporting events
- Service club activities or third-party projects
- Fundraising sponsorships for individuals or groups
The program prioritizes direct-service programs that provide tangible benefits to clients.
Funding Amounts

Organizations may submit one grant request per calendar year.
Application Process
Applications must be submitted through Boeing’s SmartSimple (STAR) online grant system.
Applicants will be required to provide:
- Organization mission statement
- Governing board members and affiliations
- List of top five highest-paid staff members
- Breakdown of funding sources
- Detailed description of the proposed project
- Explanation of the community need addressed
- Expected outcomes and number of individuals served
Required documentation includes:
- Organizational operating budget
- IRS Form 990 or audited financial statements
- Project budget
- IRS determination letter
