About the Funder

Farm Credit East is an agricultural financial cooperative serving farmers, forest product businesses, commercial fishing operations, and other agricultural businesses throughout the Northeast.

Together with CoBank, Farm Credit East administers the Northeast AgEnhancement Program to support organizations and projects that strengthen the region’s agricultural economy.

Established in 1996, the program has awarded more than $3.7 million to organizations across the Northeast.

What This Program Supports

AgEnhancement funding is designed for programs, projects, activities, and events that can demonstrate a long-term positive effect on agriculture, forest products, or commercial fishing in the Northeast.

Projects may support farms of all sizes, promote diversity within agriculture, or create opportunities for new entrants into agricultural industries.

Priority program areas include:

Leadership Development

Programs that build leadership skills among:

• Young farmers
• Beginning farmers
• Agricultural youth
• Future agricultural leaders

Past funding has supported programs connected with organizations such as FFA, 4-H, agricultural leadership programs, and young farmer development initiatives.

Economic Viability & Enhancement

Projects that strengthen the economic sustainability and competitiveness of Northeast agriculture may be considered.

Examples may include:

• Agricultural economic development
• Market development
• Farmer support initiatives
• Programs assisting beginning and emerging agricultural businesses
• Projects strengthening agricultural infrastructure or networks, excluding capital construction

Promoting Northeast Agriculture

Funding may support programs that:

• Increase awareness of Northeast agriculture

• Recognize the accomplishments of agricultural leaders
• Connect consumers with locally and regionally produced products

Building Understanding of Agriculture, Forestry & Commercial Fishing

Educational programs that increase public knowledge and understanding of Northeast agricultural industries may qualify.

This can include initiatives related to:

• Agriculture
• Forestry
• Forest products
• Commercial fishing
• Agricultural education
• Public awareness

Economic Analysis & Research

The program may support research or economic analysis that helps strengthen Northeast agriculture.

Previous projects have addressed topics such as:

• Agricultural production costs
• Farm labor
• Crop insurance
• Agricultural policy and economic conditions
• Industry viability

Geographic Eligibility

Projects must benefit agriculture, forestry, or commercial fishing within the program’s eight-state Northeast region:

• Connecticut
• Maine
• Massachusetts
• New Hampshire
• Rhode Island
• Vermont
• New York
• New Jersey

Statewide and regional projects are eligible and encouraged.

In general, the program does not support projects focused only on a single county. However, Farm Credit East specifically encourages proposals that promote or facilitate minority participation in agriculture and agriculture-related businesses. To advance this diversity objective, the program may consider one-county proposals that otherwise would not qualify.

Eligibility & Preferences

Applicants should be organizations proposing projects that provide a broader benefit to agriculture, forestry, or commercial fishing rather than support for an individual producer or business.

Competitive proposals should clearly demonstrate:

• A long-term positive impact on Northeast agriculture, forestry, or commercial fishing
• Benefits extending beyond a single individual or farm
• Clear project goals and expected outcomes
• A defined project budget
• Other financial support or sponsoring organizations, when applicable
• How Farm Credit AgEnhancement support will be recognized

Programs supporting agricultural diversity and creating opportunities for new entrants into agriculture are specifically encouraged.

Ineligible Requests

Farm Credit AgEnhancement does not fund:

• County or local school projects
• Programs or projects operated by non-agricultural charities
• Political contributions or political support
• Scholarships
• Memberships in professional societies or trade organizations
• General operating support
• Ongoing program support
• Website administration or website enhancement
• Capital or building projects
• Projects benefiting an individual or individual farm operation
• Annual state meetings
• General business or corporate meetings
• Regularly scheduled conferences
• Indirect costs associated with sponsored projects

Organizations should structure requests around a distinct project, program, activity, or initiative rather than general organizational expenses.

💰 Minimum Grant: $500
💰 Maximum Grant: $10,000

Applicants should clearly identify the amount requested and explain how AgEnhancement funds will be used.

The application must also provide information about the total project cost and the proportion of the overall project budget being requested from Farm Credit AgEnhancement.

Timeline & Review

📅 Funding Decisions: Normally within 30 days of the application deadline
📅 Grant Cycles: April 1, August 1, and December 1 annually

Applications received after a deadline are held for consideration during the following grant cycle.

Farm Credit East recommends applying well ahead of the proposed project date so that approved funding can be received before the project begins.

Important: The August 2026 application cycle has closed. Farm Credit East states that its application form closes for the month immediately following each grant-cycle deadline, so applicants preparing for the December 1 cycle should use this period to develop their proposal and monitor the application portal for reopening.

Application Requirements

Applicants must complete the online application and upload a letter describing the proposed project, program, activity, or event.

The letter should be no longer than two pages and should include:

• What the project intends to accomplish
• The amount of funding requested
• Other sponsoring organizations
• Other financial contributions
• Specific project or event dates
• Whether sponsors will be invited to participate
• How Farm Credit AgEnhancement support will be acknowledged
• A project budget
• Total project or program cost
• How the requested AgEnhancement funding will be used

Applicants may also submit up to three pages of additional supporting information.

A complete budget is required for consideration.

Organizations planning to apply for the December cycle should begin preparing their project description, budget, funding request, partner information, and recognition plan in advance.
