The Google.org Impact Challenge: AI for Government Innovation is a $30 million global open call supporting nonprofits, social enterprises, and academic institutions partnering with governments to deploy scalable, AI-powered solutions that improve public services.

Selected organizations will receive $1 million to $3 million+ in funding, along with participation in a multi-month Google.org Accelerator that provides dedicated pro bono support from Google AI experts.

Resilience

Strengthen crisis preparedness and disaster response using AI forecasting, real-time data, and predictive analytics to protect vulnerable communities.

Economy

Improve public infrastructure and affordability by optimizing transit networks, public resource allocation, and essential service delivery.

Compelling proposals outside these focus areas may be considered if they strongly align with the program’s criteria.

Out of Scope: Projects focused solely on internal government back-office operations without direct, measurable community impact.


Key Selection Criteria

Applicants must demonstrate:

Impact

  • Clear response to a critical public service challenge
  • Strong government partnership
  • Human-centered design
  • Evidence-based approach

Innovative Use of Technology

  • AI at the core (generative or agentic AI)
  • Clear explanation of how the technology adds value
  • Alignment with Google’s AI Principles

Feasibility

  • Realistic implementation plan
  • Defined government integration pathway
  • Clear success metrics

Scalability

  • Replication potential across geographies or use cases
  • Plan for knowledge-sharing
  • Sustainability beyond Google.org support

Eligibility

Eligible applicants include:

  • Nonprofit organizations
  • Social enterprises (including for-profit entities with a clear social impact purpose)
  • Academic or research institutions

Additional Requirements:

  • Must have (or secure) a government partnership
  • Applications must be submitted in English
  • Individuals without organizational affiliation are not eligible
  • Selected projects must agree, where possible, to open-source IP developed with funding

Each organization may submit up to two applications (large universities may submit multiple via separate departments).


The Google.org Accelerator

Selected organizations will participate in a structured program that includes:

  • Dedicated AI Coach and Google engineers
  • Project Success Manager
  • AI product lifecycle training
  • 1:1 mentorship
  • Peer cohort collaboration
  • In-person kickoff (September 2026)
  • In-person Demo Day (December 2026)

Participants should plan for approximately 4 hours per week commitment, with additional time during in-person sessions.

Application Process

Applications must be submitted through the official Google.org portal. Organizations should clearly outline:

  • The public service challenge addressed

  • Implementation plan and metrics
  • Scalability and sustainability strategy

Applicants may indicate requested funding amount within the application.
