About the Funder
Great River Energy is a not-for-profit wholesale electric power cooperative serving member-owner electric distribution cooperatives.
Through its corporate contributions program, Great River Energy supports nonprofit organizations that benefit its member consumers and strengthen communities where the company’s employees, facilities, and member cooperatives are located.
The company seeks to use its charitable resources to benefit the greatest possible number of people while responding to local needs and reflecting the increasing cultural diversity of the communities it serves.
Contribution or Sponsorship?
Organizations should determine whether their request qualifies as a charitable contribution or a sponsorship before applying. Applicants should not submit the same request to both programs.
Charitable Contributions
A contribution is a charitable donation made to a nonprofit organization to support its mission, program, project, or community impact.
Sponsorships
A sponsorship provides financial support in exchange for promotional or community relations benefits. Sponsorships are intended to increase awareness of Great River Energy, its member cooperatives, and energy-related issues.
Requests involving advertising, event visibility, promotional benefits, or brand recognition may be more appropriate for the company’s separate sponsorship program.

Funding may support programs and organizations that improve a community’s overall quality of life, including:
- Services for children and families
- Hunger relief and food assistance
- Disaster relief
- Emergency preparedness
- Public safety
- Programs responding to essential community needs
Education

Private educational institutions are generally not eligible.

- Programs for children and teens at risk
- Youth mentoring

- Positive youth development
- Programs promoting safety, stability, and opportunity
Eligible Organizations

Organizations may generally receive only one form of Great River Energy support during a calendar year.
Geographic Focus
Great River Energy generally focuses its charitable giving in:
- Communities served by its member cooperatives
- Communities where Great River Energy facilities are located
- Areas where Great River Energy employees and member consumers live and work
Organizations located outside the company’s immediate service area may still be considered when their programs directly benefit Great River Energy member consumers and align with an eligible funding category.
Applicants should clearly explain the connection between the proposed work and the communities or consumers served by Great River Energy.
Funding Amounts
Typical contributions range from:
- $500 to $2,500 per recipient
Great River Energy may occasionally approve smaller or larger contributions depending on available resources, community need, project scope, and alignment with company priorities.
The company’s funding approach is designed to distribute available resources across multiple organizations and communities.
Capital Project Support
Great River Energy may consider contributions for capital projects as financial resources allow.
Capital requests must meet the following guidelines:
- Great River Energy will not serve as the project’s primary funder
- The project must include support from additional contributors
- Funding may be offered as a matching contribution to leverage other support
- Funds will generally be distributed only when physical construction is actively underway
- Funds may also be distributed when needed to secure project services or materials
Organizations submitting capital requests should provide evidence of other committed or anticipated funding and a clear project timeline.
