The foundation supports community and cultural development, education, environmental programs, and health and human services. The next application deadline is August 1, 2026.

Organization: Otter Tail Power Company Foundation
Support Type: Charitable grants
Geographic Focus: Otter Tail Power Company’s service area across western Minnesota, eastern North Dakota, and northeastern South Dakota

About the Funder

Otter Tail Power Company established its foundation in 2018 to support young minds, invest in the current and future workforce, create vibrant communities, improve health and human services, and protect natural resources. The company says its tradition of giving to the communities it serves is central to who it is.

What This Program Supports

The foundation provides financial support to public charities and educational organizations that directly impact the communities it serves. Priority areas include:

Community, Civic, and Cultural Development
Support for economic and cultural development, especially expanding access to arts and culture for underserved communities.

Education
Support for early childhood education programs that build physical, mental, and social strength in youth, as well as higher education focused on curricula and capital improvements in business, political science, economics, engineering, and the sciences, especially as they relate to energy and industry.

Environment
Support for sustainability and environmental education programs that protect land, water, and air, especially those that build strong partnerships between businesses and communities.

Health and Human Services
Support for programs that assist individuals and families facing hunger, poverty, domestic violence, homelessness, and disabilities.

Eligible Support Types

  • Project-based grants for qualifying nonprofits
  • Project-based grants for educational organizations
  • Select larger grants for significant projects aligned with foundation priorities

Eligibility & Preferences

Applicants generally must be 501(c)(3) public charities. Exceptions include public and private educational institutions, volunteer fire departments, and rural EMT services. The foundation does not fund private foundations. Requests must come from within Otter Tail Power Company’s service area.

The foundation considers financial support on a per-project basis. In general, funding awards total no more than 20% of the overall project cost. Many grants fall in the $1,000 to $5,000 range, with larger grants awarded selectively for significant projects aligned with the foundation’s priority areas.

Ineligible Requests

The foundation does not fund:

  • Organizations without 501(c)(3) public charity status, except for listed exceptions
  • Private foundations
  • Requests from outside the service area
  • Individuals or employee salaries
  • Lobbying, political, or fraternal groups

  • Programs that pose a potential conflict of interest to the company
  • Religious organizations, unless the request benefits the entire community and does not promote a particular faith
  • Fundraising events, social events, or goodwill advertising
  • General operating support for educational institutions

Funding Amounts

Otter Tail Power Company Foundation does not publish a maximum grant amount on its overview page, but notes that many awards are in the $1,000 to $5,000 range and that larger awards are made selectively. In general, awards total no more than 20% of the overall project cost.
