About the Funder

The Bangor Savings Bank Foundation serves as the philanthropic arm of Bangor Savings Bank, supporting initiatives that help make communities more prosperous, livable, and vibrant.

The Foundation focuses its giving throughout Northern New England, with grantmaking targeted specifically to communities and projects in Maine, New Hampshire, and Essex County, Massachusetts.

Its funding strategy emphasizes community needs, measurable results, collaboration, sustainability, and projects capable of producing meaningful long-term impact.

Bangor Savings Bank Foundation supports organizations working within five primary areas of giving.

Culture & Arts

Initiatives that meet community needs, expand access to arts and cultural programming, or provide educational opportunities through arts and culture.

Programs that strengthen the local workforce and improve economic wellbeing, including initiatives related to:

  • Affordable housing
  • Innovation and technology
  • Vocational training
  • Workforce development
  • Economic opportunity

Initiatives that improve student readiness and academic success, including educational programming and comprehensive financial wellness initiatives.

Health & Wellness

Programs addressing essential community health needs, including initiatives supporting:

  • Physical health
  • Mental health
  • Wellness
  • Medical care and access

Programs may serve people of all ages.

Social & Community Services

Programs and services designed to improve quality of life in the communities Bangor Savings Bank serves.

Eligible Support Types

For grants in the $2,000–$5,000 funding tier, eligible expenses may include:

  • Program development
  • New facilities
  • Expanded facilities
  • Equipment
  • General operating expenses

The availability of general operating support makes this smaller grant program particularly useful for community-based nonprofits seeking flexible funding rather than support restricted solely to a specific project.

Eligibility & Preferences

Applicants must:

  • Demonstrate 501(c)(3) nonprofit status
  • Demonstrate a need for private financial support
  • Have a direct connection to one or more of the Foundation’s areas of giving
  • Generally serve communities within Bangor Savings Bank’s geographic region

The Foundation specifically identifies its grantmaking geography as:

  • Maine
  • New Hampshire
  • Essex County, Massachusetts

Grant recipients must also demonstrate that their work is directly relevant to the Foundation’s giving priorities.

Funding Priorities

The Foundation gives preference to proposals that:

  • Include a strategy for leveraging additional resources and support
  • Produce cost-effective results that can be measured and evaluated
  • Encourage private and public sector collaboration
  • Coordinate with existing community efforts and avoid duplication
  • Advance innovative and long-term strategies addressing recognized needs
  • Demonstrate sustainability, when applicable

Applicants should clearly explain not only why funding is needed, but also how the proposed work will produce measurable community benefit.

Ineligible Requests

The Foundation does not provide financial support for:

  • Political organizations
  • Political causes or candidates
  • Religious organizations or causes
  • Activities conducted for sectarian purposes

The Foundation also generally does not support:

  • Annual endowments
  • Salaries
  • Scholarships
  • Conferences
  • Seminars
  • Festivals
  • Similar events

Event sponsorship requests may instead be considered through Bangor Savings Bank’s separate Corporate Giving program.

Funding Amount

💰 Grant Range: $2,000–$5,000

This December deadline applies specifically to grant requests between $2,000 and $5,000.

Bangor Savings Bank Foundation also offers grants ranging from $5,001–$25,000, but those requests follow separate April 1 and October 1 application deadlines.

Timeline & Review

📅 Recommended Deadline: December 31, 2026
📅 Official Foundation Deadline: January 1, 2027
📅 Additional $2,000–$5,000 Cycle: July 1
📅 Funding Decision: Generally announced within 45 days

Because Bangor Savings Bank states that applications must be received before January 1, Corporate Grants Guide recommends submitting no later than December 31, 2026.

Prior applicants may reapply one year from the date of their previous submission.

Application / Request Process

Applications are submitted online through the Bangor Savings Bank Foundation.

Applicants should be prepared to describe:

  • The organization and its mission
  • The initiative or need for which funding is requested
  • Alignment with the Foundation’s areas of giving
  • Community need
  • Anticipated measurable outcomes
  • Other resources supporting the effort
  • Sustainability plans, when applicable

Why This Opportunity Is a Good Fit

This opportunity is especially strong for organizations that:

  • Serve communities in Maine, New Hampshire, or Essex County, Massachusetts
  • Need a relatively accessible grant of $2,000–$5,000
  • Are seeking general operating support
  • Need funding for programs, equipment, or facility improvements
  • Work in education, health, human services, arts and culture, economic development, or workforce development
  • Can demonstrate measurable community impact
  • Have partnerships or other resources that strengthen the proposed work

The ability to request general operating expenses is particularly valuable, since many corporate foundation grants restrict funding to specific projects or programs.

Corporate Grants Guide Notes
