The Bank of America Art Conservation Project supports nonprofit museums and cultural institutions working to conserve important works of art and cultural heritage. The program funds conservation projects for artworks and objects that are significant to the cultural heritage of a country or region, important to art history, and accessible to the public once conservation is complete.

About the Funder
Bank of America supports arts and culture through several initiatives focused on access, preservation, and community engagement. The Bank of America Art Conservation Project was launched in 2010 and has provided funding for nearly 300 conservation projects in 40 countries across six continents.
Through this program, Bank of America helps museums and cultural institutions preserve works that represent a wide range of art movements, time periods, media, and cultural traditions.
What This Program Supports
The Art Conservation Project supports conservation of works of art and cultural heritage objects that are:
- Significant to the cultural heritage of a country or region
- Important to the history of art
- On view to the public, or expected to be on view once conservation is complete
- In danger of degeneration
Eligible works may include:
- Paintings
- Works on paper
- Photographs
- Sculpture
- Architectural or archaeological pieces
- Important books or manuscripts
- Textiles
- Decorative or applied art
Bank of America does not fund exterior building restoration or infrastructure, but it may support conservation of interior artifacts such as mosaic floors, stained glass, sculptures, and paintings.
Eligible Applicants
Eligible applicants include nonprofit museums and cultural institutions.
Applicants must:
- Be a nonprofit organization
- Own the artwork or works proposed for conservation
- Be able to document the provenance of the artwork
- Agree to return the artwork to public display after conservation
- Plan to complete the conservation project within one to two years after funds are received
- Provide images, video assets, and conservation documentation
- Credit Bank of America Art Conservation Project funding for five years
For U.S.-based applicants, the organization must have 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status and not be treated as a private foundation. Organizations outside the United States must qualify as charitable or nonprofit organizations under the laws of their country or territory.
Application Requirements
Applicants should be prepared to provide:
- Project description and how the grant will be used
- Provenance and ownership history of the artwork
- Current status of the artwork and whether it is on display
- Explanation of why the artwork is important
- Urgency of the conservation need
- Images of the artwork
- Information about the conservator or conservation team and their credentials
- Expected outcomes
- Plans for the artwork after conservation
- Conservation timeline
- Location where conservation will take place
- Anticipated funding need and detailed budget
- Information about any additional funding sources
Budgets should be submitted in U.S. dollars.
Eligible Expenses
Any expense directly related to the conservation project may be included in the budget, except human resources expenses related to full-time salaried employees of the applicant organization.
Ineligible Requests
Bank of America does not fund:
- Research positions directly
- Conservation laboratories directly
- Exterior building restoration
- Infrastructure projects
- Human resources expenses for full-time salaried employees
- Multi-year grants
- Political campaign or lobbying activities
Funding Amounts
Bank of America does not publish minimum or maximum award amounts. Funding is based on the expected cost needed to complete the conservation project.
All grants are one-time grants. Multi-year grants are not awarded.
Timeline & Review
📅 Application Window: August 1–September 30, 2026
📅 Application Deadline: September 30, 2026
📅 Notification Date: By March 31, 2027
📅 Project Period: Conservation should generally be completed within 1–2 years after funds are received
📅 Final Report: Due six months after completion of the project
Applications are reviewed by the Bank of America Art Conservation Project team and the Art Conservation Project Advisory Panel.
Application / Request Process
Applicants must first submit an application with project and organizational information. If selected, the organization will be asked to complete a formal grant application through the Bank of America Corporate Giving Program.
Organizations based outside the United States will also be required to complete an application managed by Charities Aid Foundation America.
Applications are managed through Bank of America’s CyberGrants web portal.
