Funding for Health Equity, Economic Mobility & Community Well-Being

Organization: Gilead Sciences

About the Funder

The Gilead Foundation—an independent, charitable 501(c)(3) organization funded by Gilead Sciences—supports initiatives that advance health equity, educational opportunity, economic mobility, and community well-being. 4. Build Organizational & Community Capacity

Support for infrastructure, leadership development, partnership building, and long-term sustainability.

Eligibility

To be eligible, organizations must:

  • Be a U.S.-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit or an equivalent global charitable organization

  • Serve communities disproportionately affected by systemic inequities

  • Demonstrate measurable community impact and strong mission alignment

The Foundation does not fund:

  • Individuals

  • Political or lobbying activity

  • Clinical research or product promotion

  • Organizations without charitable status

Funding Amounts

The Foundation does not publish fixed award ranges. Grants vary by:

  • Program scope

  • Community need

  • Organizational capacity

  • Strategic alignment

The Gilead Foundation frequently awards significant multi-year grants to organizations with strong systems-change potential.

Deadline

The Gilead Foundation accepts proposals by invitation only, and organizations must first submit an LOI (Letter of Inquiry) to be considered.

LOI Requirement

  • Nonprofits interested in funding must submit an LOI describing organizational mission, community served, and the proposed initiative.

  • Only organizations whose LOIs demonstrate strong alignment with the Foundation’s priorities will be invited to submit a full proposal.

  • LOIs may be submitted year-round, but review timelines may vary.

Submitting an LOI does not guarantee an invitation to apply.

Geographic Focus

Funding supports nonprofits in:

  • The United States

  • Select international communities aligned with Gilead’s social impact strategy

The Foundation prioritizes communities experiencing the greatest barriers to opportunity.

Application Process

The process includes:

  1. Submit a Letter of Inquiry (LOI)

    • Outlines mission, target population, project overview, and expected outcomes

  2. Invitation to Submit Full Proposal (if LOI is approved)

  3. Provide detailed program plan, budget, evaluation methods, and organizational documents

  4. Participate in due diligence and review

  5. Execute grant agreement (multi-year funding possible)

Because funding is invitation-only, organizations should demonstrate strong alignment and community relevance.

Why This Opportunity Is a Good Fit

Ideal applicants:

  • Advance equity in health, education, or economic mobility

  • Work at the systems level or address root causes of inequity

  • Serve historically marginalized or under-resourced communities

  • Have strong leadership, community trust, and measurable outcomes

  • Seek transformational, long-term support

Organizations committed to durable, community-centered change are especially competitive.
