The Healthcare Foundation of New Jersey supports nonprofit organizations working to reduce health disparities and improve the health and well-being of at-risk, underserved individuals and families. The Foundation funds projects serving greater Newark, New Jersey, as well as the Jewish community of Greater MetroWest New Jersey.

About the Funder
The Healthcare Foundation of New Jersey works to reduce health disparities and improve the health and well-being of vulnerable populations. The Foundation supports organizations serving at-risk and underserved individuals and families in greater Newark and the Jewish community of Greater MetroWest New Jersey.
HFNJ funds health-related programs, capital and equipment needs, capacity-building efforts, and projects that strengthen compassionate and equitable healthcare delivery.
What This Program Supports
The Foundation supports projects that are directly connected to health, wellness, healthcare access, and health equity.
Program Grants
Program grants primarily support new initiatives, responses to emerging needs, or replication of promising approaches. These requests should address clear health or wellness needs among vulnerable populations.
Capital and Equipment Requests
HFNJ considers capital and equipment requests that improve access to health assets or services or help establish an equitable standard of care.
Compassion and Humanism in Healthcare
The Foundation supports projects that infuse practices of compassion and humanism into healthcare delivery.
Capacity Building
Capacity-building requests may support efforts that strengthen an organization’s ability to deliver and sustain high-quality health-related services.

Eligibility & Preferences
Eligible applicants must:
Be a private nonprofit organization with 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status
Not be a private foundation
Serve vulnerable populations within HFNJ’s catchment area
Submit a project connected to health, wellness, healthcare access, or health equity
Receive prior approval before accessing the application link
HFNJ supports organizations serving:
Newark, New Jersey and greater Newark
Jewish organizations within the Jewish Federation of Greater MetroWest NJ, including Essex, Morris, Somerset, Union, and parts of Sussex counties
Targeted vulnerable populations elsewhere in Essex, Morris, and Union Counties, when closely aligned with the Foundation’s priorities and mission
The Foundation does not make grants to individuals or government agencies.
Proposal Strengths
Strong proposals should demonstrate:
Clear alignment with HFNJ’s mission
A positive impact on underserved populations
Community engagement and cultural competency
Innovation or meaningful enhancement of services
Measurable quantitative and qualitative outcomes
Collaboration with community partners and stakeholders
A clear assessment and evaluation plan
Strong governance, accountability, and fiscal management
A budget that is appropriate to the project’s anticipated impact
A realistic plan for sustainability beyond HFNJ funding
Ineligible Requests
HFNJ does not typically fund:
Organizations outside its catchment area
Programs not related to healthcare or wellness
Proposals for food
Homeless services unless specifically connected to medical and/or mental health needs
Legal service fees
Rent stipends or housing costs
Direct support of an individual’s healthcare needs
Fundraising events or campaigns
Advertising campaigns
Education, social service, or general case management projects unless strictly connected to medical and/or mental health needs
Lobbying and advocacy projects
Scholarships
Funding Amounts
HFNJ does not publish standard award amounts for quarterly grant requests. Grant size may vary based on project type, scope, impact, budget, and alignment with the Foundation’s mission.
Special One-time Grants are considered separately on a rolling basis and are generally for requests under $35,000.

Application / Request Process
Organizations considering any HFNJ grant request must first contact the Grants and Community Outreach Manager at kmcmanemin@hfnj.org to receive approval to apply in the upcoming grant cycle.
To submit a Standard, Renewal, or Capital request, applicants must receive prior permission to access the application link. Applications are submitted through the Foundation’s online application portal.
Applicants should be prepared to submit required materials, which may include:

Logic model or evaluation chart
Project budget
Organization budget
Audited financials
Management letter
Board and key staff lists
IRS Form 990
IRS 501(c)(3) certification letter
