About the Funder

Hy-Vee is committed to making a meaningful impact in the communities it serves. Through its charitable giving programs, the company supports initiatives that address community needs, improve wellbeing, and help families and children access resources that support healthier and more stable futures.

Hy-Vee’s giving is community-centered, with local stores playing an important role in supporting nearby organizations and corporate review available for larger or broader-reaching requests.

What This Program Supports

Hy-Vee focuses its charitable giving on three primary pillars:

Health & Wellness

Hy-Vee supports initiatives that promote physical, mental, and overall wellbeing in the communities it serves. The company places particular emphasis on human health and children’s health.

Food Security

Hy-Vee supports programs addressing hunger and food insecurity, including food banks and other initiatives that help families and children access nutritious meals.

Education & Economic Empowerment

Hy-Vee invests in education, skill-building, and economic empowerment, especially for children and vulnerable populations. The company is particularly interested in trades and career pathways that are important to Hy-Vee’s future workforce.

Eligible Support Types

Organizations may request several types of support through Hy-Vee’s online donation portal:

Cash Donation
Philanthropic support without a commercial incentive.

Sponsorship
Philanthropic support that includes a commercial incentive or recognition benefit.

Hy-Vee Gift Card
Gift card support for eligible charitable purposes.

In-Kind Product / Services Request
Product or service donations from Hy-Vee.

Eligibility & Preferences

To be considered for funding, organizations must meet the following criteria:

Be a permanent, tax-exempt 501(c)(3) organization or international equivalent
Not be a private foundation
Request support for a program aligned with one or more of Hy-Vee’s giving pillars
Provide financial statements from the previous year
Submit only one request per fiscal year

Annual external audits are strongly encouraged.

Collaboration with Hy-Vee stores and employees, whether past or present, is encouraged but not required.

Review & Approval Process

Hy-Vee reviews applications on a rolling basis. Funding decisions are typically made within 90 days of submission.

The review pathway depends on the scope and scale of the request:

Local Support

For programs with localized community impact, applicants are encouraged to communicate with their nearest Hy-Vee store. Local store teams are often best positioned to understand and respond to community needs.

Corporate Review

Requests that span multiple Hy-Vee communities or exceed certain value thresholds may be reviewed by Hy-Vee’s corporate charitable giving team.

Board Review

The Hy-Vee Board of Directors reviews and votes on donation requests submitted by nonprofits and organizations in the company’s trade area. Decisions are based on alignment with Hy-Vee’s giving mission and philosophy.

Event & Capital Campaign Requests

Requests for specific events or capital campaigns must be submitted at least 90 days before the event or need date.

Capital Campaign Requirements

Capital campaign requests must meet additional requirements:

The campaign must align with Hy-Vee’s business objectives
Requested amounts should generally not exceed 20% of total funds raised from the business community or 5% of total campaign funds raised from all sources
The application must include a list of committed and requested funding sources
The funding mix should include public and private sources, including percentages of public contributions
If a feasibility study was conducted, supporting documentation must be provided

Funding Restrictions

Hy-Vee is unable to provide funding for:

Requests benefiting individuals or families
Travel or conferences for nonprofit employees
Memorials, endowments, and annual campaigns
Fraternal, labor, or social organizations
Political candidates, campaigns, or organizations
Requests for religious teachings or religious purposes
Deficit reduction campaigns
Organizations that discriminate based on race, ethnicity, religion, gender, sexual orientation, disability, or other protected statuses

Funding Amounts

Hy-Vee does not publish standard award amounts. Funding decisions depend on alignment with Hy-Vee’s giving pillars, geographic fit, request type, available budget, and the scope of the proposed impact.

Hy-Vee notes that it receives funding requests far exceeding its annual charitable giving budget. As a result, the company may decline support for worthy organizations or reduce support for previously funded programs.

Timeline & Review

📅 Application Timeline: Rolling / year-round
📅 Decision Timeline: Typically within 90 days of submission
📅 Event & Capital Campaign Lead Time: Submit at least 90 days before the event or need date
📅 Request Limit: One approved or reviewed request per organization per fiscal year

Duplicate requests will generally be held until the next fiscal year’s budget.

Application / Request Process

Organizations should submit donation requests through Hy-Vee’s online request portal and select the appropriate area of focus:

Food Security
Education & Economic Empowerment
