Walmart invests in local communities through its Spark Good Local Grants Program, providing small cash grants to nonprofit organizations, schools, government entities, and faith-based organizations serving the same communities as Walmart U.S. stores, Sam’s Clubs, and Distribution Centers.

Local grants are designed to address community-identified needs, build trust, and strengthen relationships between Walmart facilities and the communities they serve.

About the Funder

Walmart believes that investing in local communities strengthens both its business and the neighborhoods it serves. Through Spark Good Local Grants, Walmart empowers local decision-making by enabling facility managers to support trusted organizations addressing hunger, education, disaster response, workforce development, and other essential community needs.

Application Cycles (FY27)

Applications are accepted during three annual cycles:

  • Cycle 1: February 1 – April 15
  • Cycle 2: May 1 – July 15
  • Cycle 3: August 1 – November 30

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must meet all of the following requirements:

Spark Good Account & Verification

  • Have a Spark Good account on Walmart.com/nonprofits
  • Be verified by Deed, Walmart’s third-party verification partner
  • Only authorized users may submit applications

Eligible Organization Types

Applicants must serve the same service area as the Walmart facility and be one of the following:

  • 501(c)(3) public charities (classified under 509(a)(1), (2), or (3) Types I or II)
  • Government entities (federal, state, county, city, or municipal agencies)
  • Schools (K–12 public or nonprofit private schools, charter schools, colleges, or universities with NCES number or 501(c)(3) status)
  • Faith-based organizations with community-wide benefit projects (e.g., food pantries, soup kitchens, clothing closets)

Not eligible:
501(c)(4), (c)(6), (c)(19) organizations, HOAs, civic leagues, volunteer fire companies, or other non-charitable entities.

Funding Rules & Limits

  • Grant awards range from $250 to $5,000
  • Maximum of 25 pending or approved applications per organization at any time
  • Organizations may not reapply to the same facility within the same fiscal year once funded
  • Final decisions are made before the next cycle opens
  • Award amounts may be adjusted at Walmart’s discretion

Selection & Review Process

  • Applications are reviewed by local facility managers
  • Recommendations consider:
    • Mission Alignment: Addresses a demonstrated local need
    • Community Trust: Organization is compliant and promotes cohesion
    • Effectiveness: Clear use of funds, outcomes, and community impact

All decisions are final and communicated via email.

Grant Payment & Requirements

If approved:

  • Funds are distributed electronically via JP Morgan
  • Banking information must be submitted within 21 days of notification
  • Organizations must:
    • Affirm alignment with Spark Good guidelines
    • Agree to logo usage and recognition requirements

Failure to complete payment setup within 21 days will result in forfeiture of the grant.

Organizations must apply through their verified Spark Good account and select the specific Walmart or Sam’s Club facility they are requesting funding from.
