- Small nonprofits serving New Britain or Waterbury; organizations with an agency budget greater than $250,000 must instead use the Program Grant application for programs taking place in or primarily serving those two cities
- Organizations that are tax-exempt under IRS section 501(c)(3)
- Public libraries
Additional guidance includes:
- The requested amount should represent a meaningful percentage of the specific program budget
- Organizations may reapply for up to three consecutive years, but renewals are never automatic
- After receiving Community Grants in three consecutive years, there is a one-year waiting period before reapplying
- Only one Community Grant may be awarded per agency in a calendar year
- Agencies awarded a Program Grant in the past 12 months are not eligible for a Community Grant
Ineligible Requests
American Savings Foundation does not fund:
- Private foundations
- Political advocacy and lobbying
- General operating support or unrestricted grants
- Most schools, colleges, and universities
- Funding to replace municipal, state, or federal funding
- Municipalities and municipal services
- Grantmaking organizations
- Annual campaigns
- Endowment funds
- Animal welfare organizations
- Disease-specific or scientific research
- Environmental conservation, land trusts, or related causes
- Religious institutions except for non-sectarian activities benefiting the broader community
- Individuals
- Travel, field trips, teacher training, sports teams, tournaments, and most event sponsorships
- Scholarship programs
