Eligibility & Preferences
To be eligible for support from the Athene Charitable Foundation, the requesting organization must:
Be a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization or foreign public charity equivalent
Be a government instrumentality requesting support for charitable purposes
Be registered with the Secretary of State’s office in the state where the organization is located
Be based in and serve communities where Athene employees live and work
Have goals, efforts, or activities aligned with one of Athene’s pillars: Education, Human Services, Health & Well-Being, or Environmental Sustainability
Have a mission and values that align with the Foundation’s and Athene’s missions and values
Agree to provide a post-event success report describing what was achieved with the Foundation’s donation
Ineligible Organizations
The Athene Charitable Foundation does not consider requests from:
Religious organizations and entities that promote, discourage, or proselytize religious beliefs
Labor groups
Political candidates, organizations, campaigns, causes, or activities
Fraternal organizations or social clubs
Private foundations
Organizations that promote a hobby
School or alumni sports booster organizations
Municipalities or trade organizations
Organizations that discriminate on the basis of age, political affiliation, race, national origin, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, disability, sexual orientation, or religious belief
Organizations the Foundation considers controversial, incompatible with its mission, or inconsistent with its non-discrimination policy
Recreational youth athletic programs with 501(c)(3) status may be considered.
Faith-Based Organization Exception
Donation or sponsorship requests from religious organizations are generally not considered. However, a service arm or program of some 501(c)(3) religious organizations may be eligible if the program:
Is available and open to all individuals in the community
Is for non-religious purposes, such as a food pantry or domestic abuse shelter
Does not use the program to promote any religion
Examples of potentially eligible service arms may include organizations such as Catholic Charities, Lutheran Family Services, or the Salvation Army, provided the supported program meets the above criteria.
