About the Funder

What This Program Supports
The BNSF Railway Foundation generally considers grant requests that fall within one or more of the following categories:
Civic Services
Support for organizations focused on the environment, conservation, crime prevention, parks and recreation, diversity, community development, and other local community issues.
Cultural Organizations
Support for performing arts, visual arts, fine arts, museums, and related activities. The Foundation is especially interested in cultural opportunities that help underserved children experience cultural learning events or preserve their cultural heritage.
Education
Support for educational institutions and their foundations, primarily at the college level. Grants of an exceptional nature may also be made to vocational and non-college schools. The Foundation generally prefers requests focused on improving the quality of education.
Health and Human Services
Support for organizations and programs addressing human needs, including homelessness, food pantries, women’s and children’s aid, and transitional shelters.
Youth Organizations
Support for youth-serving organizations such as Boys & Girls Clubs, Camp Fire, Scouts, Junior Achievement, and similar groups.
Federally Recognized Tribal Governments
Support may be considered for federally recognized tribal governments listed in the Federal Register by the U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Indian Affairs.
Priority Areas
Preference is given to requests that fall within one of the Foundation’s areas of interest:
Environmental, sustainability, or conservation projects
Health and human services, specifically homelessness, hunger, public safety, women’s and children’s shelters, and community sports fields
STEM education programs
Organizations with connections to BNSF or the rail industry

Eligibility & Preferences
To be considered for funding, organizations must meet the Foundation’s requirements outlined in its policies.
Applicants should note the following:
Organizations must be physically located in or serve a community in close proximity to one of BNSF’s rail lines
Applicants should review the BNSF system map to confirm geographic alignment
Requests should clearly align with one or more of the Foundation’s funding categories
Preference is given to requests aligned with the Foundation’s priority areas
Organizations interested in a major gift greater than $10,000 must contact the Foundation before submitting an application
A clear fit with the Foundation’s funding categories does not guarantee funding.
Ineligible or Limited Requests
The BNSF Railway Foundation notes that it is not possible to fund every request. Applicants should review the Foundation’s policies and frequently asked questions before applying to ensure their request meets the guidelines.
The Foundation generally does not make education grants to finance the expansion of a student body or the payment of scholarships. BNSF’s scholarship programs and Employee Matching Gift Program are governed by separate policies.
